What is a public charter school?

As defined by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, a public charter school is an independent public school that operates with a unique approach. It combines innovation with accountability, offering a choice within the public education system that prioritizes student achievement. The essence of a public charter school lies in fostering a collaborative partnership among parents, teachers, and students. In this environment, parents have the opportunity to become actively involved, teachers are empowered to innovate, and students benefit from a structured framework for learning.

Understanding Georgia’s Charter Schools

The Georgia Department of Education concurs that a charter school is indeed a public school of choice, operating under the terms of a charter or contract with an authorizer, which can include the state and local boards of education. This contract-based relationship empowers charter schools with certain levels of flexibility, allowing them to deviate from specific state and local regulations. In return, these charter schools embrace a higher degree of accountability, especially when it comes to enhancing student achievement. The accountability structure for charter schools is rooted in their charter agreement, making sure they remain committed to their defined goals and objectives.
