Tybee Island, Georgia – 1/3/2024 – Tybee Island Maritime Academy (TIMA) proudly announces its outstanding performance in academic achievement, showcasing remarkable success in problem-based learning and student engagement across all grades and subgroups.  TIMA is proud to report significant post-COVID growth in ELA and Math across all grades, marking a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its educational approach.

TIMA’s commitment to fostering a strong culture of problem-based learning has resulted in exceptional academic success, as evidenced by the recently released 2023 Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) mean scores. In the SCCPSS district, TIMA ranks:

  • 1st place for 3rd grade reading above grade level
  • 2nd place for 3rd grade English Language Arts (ELA) and 6th grade Math % Proficient Learner & Above
  • in the top 5 for Reading Above Grade Level and both ELA and Math

The College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) serves as Georgia’s annual tool for measuring educational success at the school, district, and state levels. TIMA proudly outperformed SCCPSS and the state in nearly all domains, including content mastery, progress, closing gaps, and readiness in both elementary and middle grades. Some highlights include:

  • 2nd for elementary readiness,
  • 4th for middle content mastery and readiness.
  • and tied for 1st, achieving a perfect score of 100 in middle school closing gaps.

What sets TIMA apart is its unique approach to education – being the sole school in Georgia to champion high academic standards through a maritime, career-focused, project-based curriculum. This innovative pedagogy, deeply rooted in a hands-on STEAM curriculum, connects students with maritime careers and the community through collaborative problem-solving.

“At TIMA, learning is a dynamic, student-centered experience. Our interdisciplinary curriculum integrates elements from the local maritime industry and the rich natural and historical heritage of Tybee Island and Savannah,” said Peter Ulrich, Principal and Executive Director of TIMA.   “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, the enthusiasm of our students, and the unwavering support from our community.”

Moreover, TIMA’s success story has garnered attention statewide, becoming a beacon for Georgia’s Strategic Charter School Growth Initiative, aiming to expand high-quality public charter schools across communities in the state.  TIMA implements a maritime curriculum that encompasses a comprehensive exploration of the maritime industry, which includes logistics and the interconnected communities linked to Georgia’s vibrant port infrastructure. By embracing this approach, TIMA aims to further integrate the economic potential of our thriving port system into the broader fabric of the state.

In 2022, TIMA achieved the prestigious distinction of being named Georgia Department of Education STEAM Certified, the only K-8 school in the region accomplishing this. Additionally, TIMA’s innovative use of technology earned global recognition, joining the ranks of only 728 Apple Distinguished Schools worldwide for their emphasis on creation over consumption in learning and teaching with technology.
